Some answers to questions that are apparently enthralling a small but highly irritating percentage of the school population:
  • Yes, Ginger Belby did win our chess bout last week.
  • No, I am not particularly bothered about being beaten by a girl, since chess is hardly a discipline where gender bestows any advantage. Miss Belby is an excellent player. As should be obvious.
  • Yes, I will be seeking a rematch at the coming club meeting; if you're that interested, why don't you just come along?
  • No, this is not a matter of honour, it's a challenge of skill.
  • Suggestions that I will seek some unfair advantage, whether magical or otherwise, cast aspersions on my actual skill and will be treated accordingly.

[Pipe Rhys Flint]
Where are you? The commonroom's full of fourth years engaged in some cross between an orgy and exploding snap; if I stay here much longer, I'll have to take my NEWTs in Azkaban.

Ball?

Tell the school population to shove off. What sort of Chess Club president would I be if I didn't win one every now and then?

A highly organised one?

Anyway, I do. On a regular basis. Possibly familiarity is breeding contempt.

I'm down for a rematch anytime you want, broody. I'm going to wipe the chessboard with you, though.

As noted above, perky. I believe the common parlance is: you're going down.

That was not the common parlance. You can do better than that!

Your faith is very warming, I'm sure, but that's about as familiar as I with to be with that breed of vocabulary.

Are you asking me to go or asking me if I'm aware of it?

Since you haven't actually been comatose for the past two weeks, I'm assuming you're aware of it.

It's one of those blackhole subjects that makes the rest of the student body forget there is anything else of interest going on, yes. I haven't picked a dress yet.

Of the three holiday colours, I would say I'd be most likely to appear in green despite the commentary I'm sure to receive from my brother.

Obviously I'm required by law to find that acceptable, and I wasn't aware you paid any attention to a word your brother said. When did this start?

Nor did I. It's not that many people, but they're perniciously interested.

You're searching for me rather than watch angsty fourteen year olds discover sexual tension and mutual masturbation? Why, I'm stunned.

My stoic, manly reputation? It's all a front, of course. I just want to find a puppy I can cuddle.

...oh good grief, there's tickling now.

I take it 'puppy' is a euphemism.

And how does that make you feel?

A euphemism for precisely what, you insinuating deviant? ("Cuddle" may be decidedly euphemistic, however.)

Delighted with the world. Are you trying to be my therapist, or angling to achieve wholesale slaughter by proxy?

My darling sister, of course, the one true object of your heart. In that case, I'll be hoping cuddle means exactly that.

Would you fault me if I said both?

Have you been listening to our mothers again?

In intention, no. In execution, you're going to require a little more finesse before you can play me like a harp.

I received a letter from one of them today, requesting my services as a spy, delivering information on you and the Viper. They wish to know how the courtship proceeds.

There's no doubt in my mind that playing you like a harp is easier said than done.

There isn't
Actually

Say I ravished her in a public place.

This would ordinarily be where I make some sort of pun involving the phrase "highly strung", but I've had it with this evening. I'm going to assume there's liquor in our dormroom somewhere, and damn the ownership.

In the bottom of my trunk, if you're so inclined. Or you can root through the other three's slop, be my guest.
