The very notion of going back to school is even more appalling than usual. Thank Merlin this will be the last time. I have no expectation that 2024 will substantially improve until June at the earliest.

At least I have some edifying and educational reading matter for the train, courtesy of my late grandfather's personal library, apparently. One of an array of irritating presents, but at least the season wasn't all bad.

What were you reading?

It's a very old discussion of spell theory.

Yeah? That sounds interesting. Didn't you like it?

It was fascinating, actually. It covers a lot of conceptual complexity and diversity that's depressingly lacking from our modern education.

That's because our modern conversation is entirely one-sided. The spells they're teaching us, and the prerequisite passion that gives every spell its intensity, is being watered down to exclude most, if not all, dark magic.

In the process, stripping back our relationship with magic to... just a tool. Whereas we shou could be living it.

There's the rub. They lived the extreme of it and now they're making sure that we never have to, but in the process they've pushed us to the other extreme.

So much for nostalgia.

I have no intention of letting these be the best years of my life.

You had some good times here. Remember when that kid fell down the stairs?

"Fell"? Vividly. You're quite right. I just intend to have better.

Well, at least you have only a few months left.

This is what I tell myself. It's a comfort in my old age.

Good Christmas, Savannah? We didn't really get a chance to catch up at New Year's.

Anything to get you through your last term, I suppose. Any plans for your post-Hogwarts retirement?

The hols were nice. It was refreshing to finally have some semblance of peace and quiet. Did you have a good break?

Some travel, perhaps. I haven't quite decided. Mostly, as you point out, enjoying the peace and quiet.

My break was highly eventful. It had its moments.
