Just wanted to let you know that the fact I haven't so much as spoken to you since the ball has nothing to do with you. I had a wonderful time. I hope you did too.

And I've finished reading that archaic book of spell theory we've discussed previously. I was wondering if You could borrow it. If you wanted.

[Piper]
I just thought you should know that I'm writing to Mother this week, sending back the ring and letting her know that you and I are no longer... whatever. That she should rearrange her expectations.

I don't know if she'll refuse to believe it or instantly contact your mother, but on the offchance, I thought I'd give you the chance to brace yourself for whatever potentially arises.

[Rhys]
Having fun, are we?

Dude, don't even worry about it. I was having a potion-induced sexuality crisis anyway. Was that not the most annoyingly trippy thing?

I'd love to! Can we get all Literary Club all up in this bitch? Or, to speak your language, might we associate further to discuss the finer conceptual points once I have finished perusing this, the most wondrous of gifts?

I'm finding it difficult to imagine you having any sort of crisis. It was... all right, yes, it was annoyingly trippy, that's a rather accurate description. I certainly had better things to do with my time than obsess arbitrarily.

I'd very much like to discuss it with you. Getting your thoughts on it is rather my ulterior motive here. And it... might be best to keep it just between us. The book isn't exactly prescribed reading.

I was all up on Lola Derrick despite my obvious heterosexuality. Who were you giving the sex eye to? I mean, if you want to share. I understand if you don't, you kind of drip of Dark and Brooding Secretiveness.

Ha, ulterior motives. You are so much fun. I'll hide it with my copy of Secrets of the Darkest Art.

Well, Lola is a very nice girl. I know this for a fact, because my mother keeps a list. And I beg your pardon, I never drip in company. I was.. finding the younger Cornfoot sharply more fascinating than I ever had previously.

Isn't that a marital gui--no, wait, that's Darkest Heart. Never mind.

Glad to know I wasn't the only one having a sexuality crisis! I mean, I'm more go-with-the-flow about that sort of thing because my mum is one of those mums that say awkward things like "Oh, I had all sorts of flings in school and only most of them were men", but that probably made you really uncomfortable.

Tangent - Are you going to get married straight out of school?

To be hone Actually He's not entirely my type, no. Frankly, that enforced kissing business from last year was more irritating.

Even if I were crazy and inclined to, that sort of thing is frowned upon. There are social niceties to be observed, you know. Hoops to jump through. There's a lot of talk about laying the foundations of lifelong bonds and growing together as adults, but frankly I think it's just that the old biddies want a chance to live vicariously through the engagement. I might have been able to waive some of that if P I'm not really in any hurry, anyway.

You are so boring. I loved the kissing thing! Snogging is fun and I don't get to do it nearly enough because I'm not a slut.

My mum says all you lot do is get arrange marriages and look down on people, so I figured I should, you know, ask you myself.

I'm entirely amenable to kissing, when it's my choice of time and person. Though I will admit to preferring quality over quantity. Do you care about defining yourself with that label, or other people using it?

Your mother's missing a lot of the nuance, though in broad strokes I suppose she's not entirely inaccurate. And it depends on your definition of an arranged marriage. No pureblood girl is going to be sold as my bride for twenty kelpies. But my parents might seat me at dinner next to a girl they think I might find interesting, having spoken to her parents first to discover if she has a prior attachment. There's an honesty in that. We all know where we stand.

Well, and I know this is purely subjective theorizing here so pardon me a minute, but in my personal dogma, the label of slut when applied to oneself or to someone else by myself is defined as "acting sexually out of character for reasons having nothing to do with personal choice or empowerment". Because, from what I hear, sex is fucking awesome, but I know me and I wouldn't have it with a bunch of different people. That would be slutty for me. Maybe someone else would have sex with a bunch of different people, but if they're doing it because they want to and not because they want to have a couple of hours of pleasure before they start feeling dirty and need something else to fill the void, then that's slutty. You know?

Hm. Well, I guess that makes sense.

So you would mind doing more kissing, but it would have to be with someone you actually want to kiss? Not only do I not fault that logic at all, I could probably subscribe to it myself.

Further questions about how the other half live?

Well. Yeah. I don't see the point in kissing someone I don't want to be kissing. What's in it for me?

Do all of you reading archaic books of spell theory or is that just you?

I completely agree.

I'm sure it's not just me. But it can be a challenging hobby, and not everyone believes the risks are worth it.

We don't live in a universe where I actually want to know what you do or don't want to do with my brother. The engagement is over, your choice is made, I accept it, I'll see you around.

I'm not entirely sure we should discuss your state in anything even approximating public. Unless you've dipped your quill in catnip and that's the only reason for your apparent oral fascination with it.
